David’s novel Peterdown won the 2022 McKitterick Prize. It’s an epic social satire set in the fictional, post-industrial British town of Peterdown, which has a proud history but a struggling present. The story revolves around the town being selected as a regional hub for a new, ultra-high-speed railway line called High Speed+, intended to usher in a prosperous future. However, this development requires demolishing a local landmark, with two main contenders on the chopping block: the Larkspur Hill housing estate, a significant modernist architectural site, and the Chapel, the cherished home of the town’s football team, Peterdown United.
