Folkestone Illustration Festival – A True Privilege
It was a real privilege to be a guest at the very first Folkestone Illustration Festival. For years I’ve animated, designed characters and backgrounds, and now created a graphic novel—so to be welcomed and celebrated as an illustrator felt like a genuine honour.
Of course, illustration isn’t new territory for me. I once taught on Kingston’s Illustration & Animation course, so stepping into this festival felt like reconnecting with a community I’ve always valued deeply.
The event took place at Folkestone’s Kollective, an incredible arts centre run by Katie and Joseph. They are such generous, welcoming people, and the whole space radiates a strong sense of community and creativity.
One highlight was a lively Q&A with Astrid Goldsmith and Navied Mahdavian. Astrid’s upcoming book The Crystal Vase (out 15th January) is a moving memoir about her grandmother, while Navied’s This Country is a powerful road story exploring life across America. Both works are truly special and deserve your attention.
I also had the pleasure of catching up with Sol from Flatword and the wonderful Abigail Addison from Animate Projects—two people whose passion for storytelling and animation continues to inspire.
