ON THIS DAY 20 YEARS AGO… Pete Returned to the Forest

Back in 2005, a strange little film burst onto the scene at the BFI London Film Festival. It was called Who I Am and What I Want, a black-and-white animated fever dream created by me and the inimitable David Shrigley. It told the story of Pete—a wild-eyed forest dweller who, unable to cope with modern life, surrenders himself to Nature. Raw, surreal, and unapologetically weird, Pete became an underground icon.

The film didn’t just make waves—it made a splash. Winner of nine awards, including:

  • The coveted Tiger Award at Rotterdam
  • Public Choice at the British Animation Awards
  • Best Comedy at Stuttgart
  • Best British Short Nomination at the BIFAs 2006

It even earned an 18 certificate and found its way onto DVD thanks to the visionary folks at onedotzero and animate projects.

Now, Pete’s Back—and Louder Than Ever

To celebrate this epic anniversary, we’re hosting a special screening of the newly remastered Who I Am and What I Want at Bar Shorts on 4th November at 7:30 PM.

Featuring a glorious 5.1 surround sound remix courtesy of the sonic wizards at Fonic Studio. Plus: a selection of other works by David Shrigley. And: a live conversation with both David and myself—yes, we will both will be there in person.

This is a rare chance to experience one of Britain’s most iconic artists in an intimate setting. Expect laughs, weirdness, and maybe a little existential dread.

Tickets are limited—and going fast. Click here to grab yours before Pete disappears into the woods again.
